Larry Burkett initiated the Life Pathways program as part of Christian Financial Concepts in 1990. The program began using several pre-existing assessments. After extensive research and development, the first version of what is now Personality I.D.® was introduced in 1993 as a paper assessment in booklet form with scoring and interpretation included. In 1995, the first diskette version was produced for use on individual computers. In 1998, the first Money and Marriage version on CD_ROM with computer scoring and the first two-person comparison report for couples. The first online Personality I.D.®on www.crown.org was also introduced in 1998 as a complimentary assessment with a very short sample report. In 2000, the first version for teams (maximum six members) was produced on CD-ROM. Financial attributes were developed and introduced online in 2003 with the Money Map Personality I.D.®. The first complete online version was introduced in 2009 as the Couples Personality I.D.® adding the financial attributes to the previous Money and Marriage version. The Global Personality I.D.® with the multiple applications of Building StrongTeams, Building Strong Families, and Building Strong Marriages was introduced in 2012.

In Larry Burkett’s vision for helping people and employers to be aware of the personality strengths of themselves, the other people around them, and employees, if applicable, he wanted to start with biblical principles. Although there were many assessments, few if any, approached work from the biblical perspective that people are created with specific patterns of personality strengths. Personality I.D. ® was developed based on biblical principles and designed to describe full blended profiles of statistically common patterns of the four personality factors.

  • Individual assessment: Most other assessments describe only the “High” end of a personality/ D.I.S.C. factor and ignore the “Low” end of a factor. Personality I.D. provides descriptions of “High,” “Low,” and “Mid-range” scores for all four factors. More importantly, it provides in-depth descriptions of 16 common blended profiles (combinations of the four factors) using more than 20 attributes important in all types of personal and work interactions, including financial management.
  • Comparison profiles:
Most assessments leave it up to the user to compare profiles of two people and interpret similarities and differences. Personality I.D. provides both graphical and written feedback with direct comparisons of strengths and struggles of the four factors composing the blended profiles. Applications for business, families, and other group interactions are available.
  • Team analysis:
Teams of all types -- business, club, committees, and even families, have specific dynamics based on the personalities of the people composing the team.
    • Team graphical presentation:
A combined team member graph provides an “average” of the current team members with a Team blended Profile analysis.
    • All team members presentation graph:
All team members are individually shown on the same graph together with the full team average graph. This graph shows the diversity of the team with the combined Blended Profile
    • Variable team composition:
This option enables the user to add and/or subtract available team members available to and from a ‘virtual’ team and shows the combined team profile of the selected members.

There are several similarities. Both the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and Personality I.D. (P.I.D.) have 4 bi-polar factors and each has 16 types (M-B) or blended profiles (P.I.D.). The M-B types are various combinations of highs and lows on the four factors.
(P.I.D.) has blended factors that are based on discriminate analysis and multiple regression profiles derived from research and development of the responses to the items beginning in the early 1990’s. It also uses mid-range as well as factor high and low scores in the interpretation of the scores. In addition, the programming provides report feedback for two-person comparisons and extensive team analysis. Specific financial behavior as well as classic personality behavior for each blended profile is included in the feedback provided.

Myers-Briggs has, of course, a long history of multi-national use and thousands of people well-trained in interpretations and applications, so much so that simply stating the initial of a M-B type gives a knowledgeable person an understanding of the person being described.
Although Personality I.D. has almost 20 years of history since its origins with Crown Financial Ministries, it does not have the name recognition of Myers-Briggs, but the psychometric development has been every bit as rigorous and extensive. People that are familiar with both tools are impressed with the information and accuracy of the feedback reports from the Personality I.D.

The assessment itself takes on average fifteen minutes for completion.

UNDERSTANDING THE DISC CONCEPT OF PERSONALITY
INTRODUCTION: This personality discovery instrument is similar to the four- dimensional DISC system but rotates the graph horizontally and gives equal value to both ends of the continuum. (For example, in our new system we use the term Adaptive instead of low D.) Instead of focusing on who you are not, this instrument allows you to focus on who you are. If you wish to compare this instrument to other personality surveys that use only the four primary dimensions of behavior, you’ll notice you can still refer to the right side of the graph and locate the D, I, S, and C dimensions. Additionally, Dr. Tim LaHaye and Florence Littauer have written excellent books on temperament, using the traditional terminology for these dimensions: Choleric (D), Sanguine (I), Phlegmatic (S), and Melancholy (C). Authors Gary Smalley and John Trent use the terms Lion (D), Otter (I), Golden Retriever (S), and Beaver (C) in some of their books and presentations to describe these four dimensions.
In order to use the information there are several key concepts to understand.

  • We are all born with certain differences in personality and thus are motivated by different circumstances, opportunities, and environments.
  • These differences in motivation enable us to do some things better than others.
  • Different does not mean wrong; therefore, we should accept and respect those whose personalities are not like ours. It is not our role to change others.
  • All profiles/people have strengths and weaknesses. Profiles should not be used as excuses to ignore bad habits or character flaws.
  • By understanding our personalities, as well as how others are different, we are equipped to better manage our own lives and work more effectively with others.

Our co-founder, Larry Burkett, noted that during the many years that he was counseling businesses and families on their finances, he frequently observed employees in jobs that did not match their personalities. It concerned him greatly that so many employers were not aware of their employee’s personality strengths and, therefore, were not making good use of their talents. This resulted in his vision for what is now Personality I.D.®. Additional applications were later developed for couples and marriages, families, and other non-business groups and teams.

An exact number is not possible since the free sample assessment has been available online, however based on projections of online activity and materials purchased containing Personality I.D.®, it is estimated that well over 140,000 persons have taken Personality I.D.®.

You can buy assessments in two ways.

  • As single assessments from the landing page.
  • Buying a license as a Consultant and then adding all your clients to your account.

The assessment is comprehensive and currently provides over twenty different feedback categories including financial attributes for individuals. It also provides in-depth analysis for two-person comparisons, and extensive information for teams and groups of all sizes. Applications for Personality I.D.® include business management, family and non-business groups, and marriages.

The results from the personality portion of Personality I.D.® were validated against the personality factors of Career Direct®.
Overall, the correlations between the factors of the Personality I.D. and similar factors of another validated personality inventory (the Career Direct Personality Inventory portion of the Complete Guidance System) provide evidence of convergent validity. Both the Personality I.D. and the Crown Financial Ministries’ Career Direct Guidance System (Personality section only) were administered to 571 individuals. The Personality I.D. factors were correlated with the personality factors of Career Direct (Dominance, Extraversion, Compassion, Conscientiousness, Adventurous, Innovation, and Stress) using a 1 to 5 Likert or continuous scale. Personality I.D. ’s D/A (Directing/Adapting), I/R (Interacting/Reserved), S/O (Supportive/Objective) and C/U (Conscientiousness/Unconventional) factors significantly correlated with the Career Direct factors of Dominance, Extraversion, Compassion and Conscientiousness with correlation coefficients of .59, .64, .46, and .52; respectively. Format differences between the personality inventories (forced choice vs. Likert scaling) along with differences in factor definitions have likely lowered the correlations between the factors of these inventories.

Reliability tests are above acceptable levels as shown in the test-retest reliability measures below.
Test-retest reliability studies were conducted with a total of 345 participants who completed the Personality I.D. assessment two times. The correlation coefficients for D/A, I/R, S/O, and C/U were .82, .76, .82, and .73. Therefore, the factor scores demonstrate sufficient test-retest reliability over time.

A complete description of the research and development history is found under Research and Development. Briefly, the assessment was developed over an eight-year period using standard psychometric principles and testing several hundred people. The assessment is not based or derived from existing instruments but was developed from the item level using factor analysis and other statistical analyses to develop the factors and scoring.

Personality I.D.® business and organizational version is designed to give all types of leadership and managerial personnel the tools to improve selection, assignment, and management of their staff. Understanding the personalities, strengths and struggles, and the many aspects of how people operate individually and with other people is valuable for anyone in a leadership position. This knowledge enables management to maximize the productivity and job satisfaction of the people they supervise by understanding their best types of task assignments, environment, and communication. By making effective team assignments, managers can help team members to contribute in effective ways to further the organization’s goals.

The sample version of Personality I.D.® contains only five of the twenty-plus descriptive attributes for each blended profile. The simple free report provides the user with very basic feedback. The full version is only available via purchasing a Full Report or contacting a licensed consultant.
